Centrally located on US Hwy 71 and Iowa Hwy 9, Spirit Lake, Iowa is 20 minutes south of Interstate 90, making it a day's drive or less from major midwest cities. It is also in the center of what is known as Iowa's Great Lakes Region, which encompasses seven beautiful natural lakes.

Job Description
Basic Function: The Director is the chief executive and administrative officer of the organization.
Scope: He/she is responsible and reports to the board of directors for the full range of activities, organizational structure and procedures; motivation of volunteers; income and expenditures; maintenance of membership; employment, training and supervision of staff; interpretation of policy; maintenance of records; long range planning.
Functions:
Income & Expenses: Through the Executive Committee, the Director is responsible for developing the chamber budget and relating budget to program goals. As approved by the board, the Director is responsible for all expenditures within the framework of the budget. He/she will present monthly financial statements of income and expenses and budget statements. He/she will ensure that financial records of the chamber are retained in the appropriate manner. He/she will seek maximum staff efficiency in all financial procedures.
Motivation of Volunteers: Key to the effectiveness of the chamber is the ability of the Director to motivate and inspire volunteers to creative and fruitful action.
Membership: The membership committee [board of directors], supported by staff, is responsible for maintaining the membership at a level that will ensure necessary income for the operation of the program.
Chamber Staff: The Director is responsible for the employment of all staff personnel, the assignment of their duties, the supervision of their work, and the establishment [within the framework of the approved budget] of the terms of their employment.
Interpretation of Policy: The Director will ensure that chamber policy, as established by the board, is properly recorded in minutes and indexes of the Policy Manual. He/she will assist the board, committees, members and the staff in interpretation of policy in relation to any given question or program.
Headquarters: As approved by the board, the Director is responsible for the location, design and maintenance of headquarters that will provide for an efficient operation and present an attractive "front door" for the use of chamber members, the community and visitors.
Long Range Planning: Under the direction of a constantly evolving board and an annually changing roster of officers, the Director is responsible for maintaining continuity and consistency in programming. Based on proper research of community needs, the Director must anticipate emerging and long-range problems and recommend chamber and community programs to meet such problems.
Liaisons
a) With the Board of Directors: The Director is responsible for preparing an agenda, maintain board minutes and records, carrying out plans and programs of the board in accordance with established policies, serving as representative of the board for all contacts with the chamber staff, initiating programs for consideration by the board and advising the board on all matters under consideration.
b) With Chamber Members: The Director must motivate members to support - personally and financially - the chamber program. The Director must analyze and interpret the needs of members and recommend revisions to improve service and assistance to make membership more valuable.
c) With Staff: The Director must lead the professional staff. Since he/she is responsible for the employment and training of all staff members, the Director assumes responsibility for their efficient performance of duty. The Director establishes appropriate duties and assigns accordingly. The Director must create working conditions that are conducive to maximum performance and employee morale.
d) With the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce: The Spirit Lake Chamber, as a division of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber, the Director shall provide monthly updates to be shared with the IGLA Chamber Board of Directors, work with and alongside the IGLA Chamber team on shared events and programs that benefit the members of the Chamber. The Director shall be an important part of the overall Chamber team, which includes the IGLA Chamber and Okoboji Tourism Committee.
e) With the Community: Through personal contact with key community leaders, the Director helps shape the community. He/she is frequently called upon to relate chamber activities to the activities of other groups in improvement of the commercial, industrial and civic life of the community. The Director represents the chamber in meetings of local, state and national organizations. He/she must constantly strive to develop a better public understanding of the purpose of functions of the organization.
